In celebration of the gorgeously design-led boutique hotel’s first birthday, Miss LF took a trip to The Ampersand in South Kensington last week. Having officially opened its contemporary double doors to the world on 29th August last year, this unique stay offers 111 themed rooms including astronomy detailing for the intimate Single & Double rooms which are designed for a short stay, the musically inclined Superior Rooms or the ornithologically-inspired Deluxe Rooms and Deluxe Studios.
The Ampersand also offers five deluxe suites on the fourth and fifth floor with geometry interiors and a glorious view of the city skyline. The building’s interior itself acts as a form of escapism from the pandemonium of Chelsea with botanical sketches and feathery installations throughout, keeping in theme with its British sense of whimsical design.
Miss LF retreated to one of the Deluxe rooms surrounded by gargantuan bird motifs which were inspired by drawings found in The Natural History Museum, with luxurious touches such as the oversized velvet bedhead and an indulgent chaise longue at the end of the king size bed. Miller Harris toiletries were stocked decadently in the monochromatic bathroom and a round the clock 24-hour room service was certainly made use of (2am ice cream anyone?).
One of the most exquisite things about The Ampersand other than the decor, is the use of fine dining tailored to suit individual needs such as the dandy ‘Part English drawing room, part salon de thé’ serving sweet bites and afternoon tea, or head downstairs beneath the Victorian cellar arches to the intimate setting of the Apero restaurant and bar where New York City-esque industrial light fittings and exposed brickwork juxtapose the Mediterranean menu.
Miss LF highly recommends The Ampersand for either a short sightseeing stay or a long haul, just be sure to fully appreciate the graphic visuals this boutique hotel so finely stands for, having been named after the iconic typographic symbol after all.
